Motivation and Concentration
Motivation means being willing to spend some effort to fulfill an aim. Wider explanation is motivation can be defined as mechanisms which pushes an organism to a behavior, determines the orderliness and continuity of this behavior and gives direction and purpose to this behavior and provides process of these with internal and external factors.
Concentration is to be able to focus a subject mentally for a period of time. Concentration time can change from person to person and also change from subject to subject on same person. Generally, it is possible to concentrate subjects which you like, wonder, give importance to and can do.
Loss of concentration in other words reverie means thinking of any other subject rather than the subject that we need to focus on.
Since human brain cannot think and do two separate things at the same time, we can find ourselves thinking about other subject instead of our real subject. Everybody can be reverie sometimes but what matters is the frequency and duration of it.
Here is a test which you can figure out how reverie you are:
Count your breath from 1 to 10 while walking on a street. Count again when you are done. See how many times you can do it. Ideal one is more than 5-6 times. If you continue to count like 11, 12, 13 after 10 instead of starting over, be careful on which number you realize that you should go back to 1. This number can be the indication of how long you can reverie. It has been seen that very reverie people can count up to 120s.
There are 4 functions of motivation and concentration:
1. Starting the behavior,
2. Determining the severity and level of the behavior,
3. Directing the behavior,
4. Sustaining the behavior.
As it can be understood from these explanations, motivation and concentration is a chain of processes which start, direct, sustain and eventually stop a series of target-driven behavior. It means encouraging, fortifying, activating, stimulating, directing, disposing, tempting.
In short, it is all of the powers or the efforts which activates a person for a target. Without a need, there is no possibility to motivate a person. In other words, to be motivated, a process of thinking which aims to provide a need should be started and eventually, the mind should come to a decision that will satisfy the need. Since the process goes this way, it is possible to mention of a strong relationship between being motivated and determining the needs, forming of the mental process for fulfilling them and as a result coming to a decision.
Learning is ones realizing own needs, evaluating the opportunities that fulfills them and rewards and reacting them voluntarily. One should focus own energy to learning and participate actively to learning. The power that determines whether one will participate or not is the learning motivation.
Motivation and concentration is one of the most important power sources that determines the direction, severity and stability of the behaviors of students. Every student is responsible for participating learning-teaching processes willingly, obeying the principles that learning brings and learning. Learning can be jeopardized if the learner’s motivation is low even if knowledge or a skill is given by using all principles and rules of education. On the contrary, the more motivated students, the more desire and effort for learning of student increases. Effective education is the education that provides the support which facilitates learning while raising the instinct motivation of the learner. The more successful a person becomes in learning, the more self-confidence and expectation for success increases; therefore, it increases motivation level and provides learning to be more efficient.
When we consider motivation and concentration as willingness of students for achieving specific academic goals, a student who is not motivated enough can reflect the following behaviors:
- Student does not continue to the lessons regularly, comes lessons late.
- Student does not listen courses carefully, becomes interested in friends or other things.
- Student does not look for a solution when s/he encounters a problem in home works.
- Student does not have a realistic perspective about own skills or talent (might over or underestimate himself).
- Student has negative beliefs of himself.
- Student looks uninterested to the lessons, hard to pull them into the lecture.
On the contrary, an effectively motivated student:
- Tries to be on time and prepared for the class.
- Carries the course materials and uses them.
- Participates to the lesson by asking questions and reflecting opinions.
- Has high responsibility for lessons and academic duties.
- Has high energy level for research and solving problems when encounters a problem related with academic duties.
Success requires controlled and sustained motivation and concentration. A student who wants to be successful should definitely study. However, people cannot start studying on a subject immediately. The reason behind it is that there is a need for mental and emotional preparation before studying. It is obvious that this preparation is directly related with being motivated.
A student must study for being successful. However, internal and external factors should be evaluated in a healthy way for studying. Success does not depend on only hard working or working in a specific period. Disciplined and continuous studying is inevitable as a matter of success. The pushing power provides this is the motivation.
Motivation is the basis that determines success of students when it comes to University Entrance Exam. If the student becomes motivated by internal reasons, this motivation usually leads to success. If the opposite, motivation sources should be found by the teachers and parents and they should motivate the student efficiently.
The way for achieving this is preparing a suitable improvement plan according to the potentials, skills and interests of the students. What is desired is to keep motivation level under control. This point is very important because control is and important and necessary tool for uninterrupted motivation.
